Glucose is the body's main fuel. After a meal, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which moves into the bloodstream; the pancreas responds by releasing insulin, the hormone that lets muscle, liver and fat cells take that glucose in. Between meals the liver releases stored glucose to keep the supply steady. When this system works, blood glucose stays inside a fairly narrow range all day.
Metabolic conditions develop when the system stops working smoothly. In insulin resistance, cells respond less to insulin, so the pancreas has to make more of it. In prediabetes, glucose is above normal but below the threshold for diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas can no longer keep up, and glucose stays high enough to damage blood vessels and nerves over time. These are stages on a continuum, not separate diseases, which is why the same changes — weight loss, physical activity, sleep, and in some cases medication — matter at every stage.
