What these products are
Oral probiotics (dissolving tablets and lozenges), "tooth and gum" vitamin formulas, and dental candies, sold against bleeding gums, bad breath and decay. The educational base: the Oral Health hub, gum disease's stages, tooth decay's chemistry, and the oral-probiotic evidence review.
What they cannot do
- Replace dental treatment. The positive probiotic trials were adjuncts to scaling and root planing — both groups got the dentistry.
- Rebuild enamel or "regrow" gums — remineralization is saliva-and-fluoride chemistry; lost periodontal bone does not return via lozenge.
- Outperform the basics — fluoride, interdental cleaning and xylitol's modest habit hold the prevention evidence.
The evidence, in one table
| Claim | Evidence | Honest role |
|---|---|---|
| L. reuteri lozenges + deep cleaning | Limited | Fractionally better pocket/bleeding measures as adjunct |
| S. salivarius K12 for breath | Limited | Small trials, after tongue cleaning |
| Probiotics preventing cavities | Insufficient | Bacterial counts move; cavity outcomes unproven |
| "Rebuilds teeth and gums" formulas | None | No product-level trials exist |
What our reviews check
Named strains with letters-and-numbers designations against the trialled ones, CFU doses and formats (lozenge residence time versus swallowed capsules), sugar content in candy formats, claim language against the adjunct-only evidence, replacement-for-dentistry framing (disqualifying), and seller-page terms verified by date.
The verdict across 7 reviews
The aisle is complete. Ranked by our scores:
| Product | Score | One line |
|---|---|---|
| ProDentim | 2.9 | The aisle ceiling — named branded strains with real (small) trials, CFU printed |
| Provadent · FortBite · DentaBiome | 2.5 | Partial honesty — named ingredients undercut by nameless strains, a risky abrasive instruction, and "postbiotic" wordplay |
| Synadentix · Biodentix | 2.1 | Real enamel minerals and long rosters, no doses, drifting labels |
| DentaVive | 2.0 | ProDentim's statistics without ProDentim's names |
What survived: the $3 fluoride tube's 70-year evidence file, xylitol at real 6+ g chewed doses, lozenge-format named strains (S. salivarius K12/M18) for the probiotic-curious — and the dental chair for anything that hurts, bleeds, or wobbles.
