Floaters — drifting specks, threads and cobwebs, most visible against bright plain backgrounds — are shadows of debris in the eye's vitreous gel, which liquefies and clumps with age. Longstanding, stable floaters are harmless. The emergency pattern is change: a sudden shower of new floaters, flashes of light, a large "cobweb," or a dark curtain across any part of vision — signs the shrinking gel is pulling on the retina and may have torn it. That combination is a same-day dilated exam, because a tear is fixed in minutes with laser while a detachment needs surgery and threatens sight.
What floaters are
The vitreous — the clear gel filling the eye — is collagen and water arranged youthfully as optical-grade transparency. With age it liquefies unevenly; collagen fibers clump and drift, and each clump casts a moving shadow on the retina: a floater. They drift with eye movement, dart away when looked at directly, and photograph against bright plain fields per the FAQ. By middle age nearly everyone owns a few; nearsighted eyes and post-cataract-surgery eyes acquire them earlier.
Most floaters, most of the time, are this: harmless debris in aging gel, requiring adaptation rather than treatment.
The event behind sudden floaters: PVD
Around the 50s–70s the shrinking vitreous eventually peels away from the retina — posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) — usually announced by a burst of new floaters (often one large ring or cobweb) and some peripheral flashes. PVD itself is a normal life event, settling over weeks to months.
The danger is in the peeling: in a minority (roughly 10–15% of symptomatic PVDs), the gel is stuck too firmly somewhere and tears the retina on its way off. A tear is painless, sight is often still fine — and it is the doorway to retinal detachment, where fluid seeps through the tear and lifts the retina off like wallpaper, destroying vision zone by zone.
The clinical arithmetic that makes this page worth reading: a tear found early is sealed with laser in an outpatient visit; a detachment needs urgent surgery with recovery measured in weeks and vision often incompletely restored. The difference between the two is usually days — which is why the symptom set below buys a same-day dilated exam, no triage negotiation:

Floaters with other stories
- Blood as floaters (vitreous hemorrhage) — sudden haze or swarms of dark specks; in anyone with diabetes, proliferative retinopathy is the classic cause and needs urgent retinal care
- Inflammation (uveitis) — floaters with an aching red light-sensitive eye: urgent, different specialty of the same clinic
- Migraine aura — shimmering zigzags expanding over ~20 minutes, both eyes, resolving: a different phenomenon with its own rules
- After cataract surgery or eye injections — new floaters get the same-day standard; these eyes have earned it
Living with the benign kind
Once examined and cleared, management is neuroadaptation: the brain de-renders stable floaters remarkably well within months, helped by not hunting for them; hydration and screen habits are comfort measures, not cures; and treatment for intrusive cases sits with specialists per the FAQ. Why do I see floaters against the sky or white screens?
Floaters are literal shadows cast on the retina by clumps in the vitreous, and shadows need bright, even backlighting to show. Against a clear sky, snow or a white page they stand out; in visually busy scenes the brain edits them away. More visible in bright light is normal optics, not worsening.
I've had the same few floaters for years. Do they need checking?
Stable, familiar floaters in an eye that has been examined before are the benign kind; mention them at routine visits. What are the flashes, exactly?
Brief arcs or sparks of light, classically in peripheral vision and in the dark, produced when the vitreous tugs the retina — mechanical stimulation that the retina can only report as light. Occasional flashes accompany normal vitreous detachment; persistent or increasing flashes, especially with new floaters, mean the tugging phase is active and the retina should be inspected while it happens.
Can floaters be treated or removed?
Mostly they fade from awareness as the brain adapts and the debris settles. For the rare severely intrusive case, options exist — vitrectomy (definitive, with real surgical risks) and YAG laser vitreolysis (selected floaters, mixed evidence) — decisions for a retina specialist after the important question (is the retina intact?) is settled. No drops, exercises or supplements clear floaters, whatever the adverts say.
