What L-citrulline is

L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid, named for the watermelon it was first isolated from, that sits in the urea cycle and — more relevantly here — in the body's nitric-oxide supply chain. The sequence: citrulline → arginine (in the kidneys) → nitric oxide (in blood-vessel linings, via the enzyme eNOS). Nitric oxide relaxes vascular smooth muscle: vessels widen, pressure falls, and in the penis, blood floods the erectile chambers — the exact pathway described in how an erection works.

The delivery logic matters: oral arginine is largely destroyed before it circulates, while citrulline escapes and converts downstream, raising blood arginine more efficiently per gram. Citrulline is, in effect, the better arginine supplement.

The key human trial (Cormio and colleagues, Urology, 2011): 24 men with mild ED (erection hardness score 3 — "hard enough for penetration but not completely hard") took placebo for one month and L-citrulline 1.5 g/day for another.
